Fasting

In America people don’t fast for any particular reason, but many diet to lose weight. In the Muslim religion there is a lot of fasting involved for example Ramadan. Well in the Hindu religion just like the Muslim religion we fast quit a lot. For example, one of the fasts I participate in is called ‘Janmastami’ August or September depending on the Hindu calendar, but the reason I do it is because that is when our Lord Krishna was born. The religious followers of Lord Krishna celebrate the festival of Janmashtami by keeping ‘nirjal’ fast, meaning fasting without having even a single drop of water. They believe that by keeping this type of fast they will come closer to God. Devotees who can't follow such a strict fast keep fruit fast having only milk and fruits during the fast. Devotees observe strict discipline while fasting. They refrain from having cereals and salt on the day of the festival. They also feel that keeping such a fast is the only way that they can offer God. Fasting is accompanied by singing of devotional songs at midnight. The week of Lord Krishna’s birth date all of our family and friends make different types of food, from enchiladas to chow mien and of course it consists of mainly Indian dishes. The prayer room holds about 50 main course dishes and 100 sweets and desserts laid out on mini steps that lead to the statues of Lord Krishna as well as statues of other Gods. The tradition we fallow is the day before Lord Krishna’s birth we gather all of our family friends have a festivity as big as possible at either my house or my uncle’s house we rotate every year. Finally at midnight we throw candy out from behind a curtain. The lord awakes then eats/ tastes his food. We then take the food out and lay it on tables and everyone can then eat that food, which has been blessed by the Lord.

Paneer =]

Food, glorious food...The way to a man's heart is through his stomach....and so many other clichés that all centre around one of life's necessities - eating. Without exception people aim to ensure you into a truly unique, unforgettable cuisine experience. People combine the ancient with the modern and take you down the path to losing yourself in the exotic flavors of INDIA.
Being Indian I have many favorite main courses dishes, side dishes, sweets, appetizers and many other things. In many of my blogs you will catch me writing about all sorts of delicious food. Delicious to me may mean the total opposite to you. As many people like to think, the color and texture can really throw you off. It is not necessarily true, but that is what the American society has done to our psychological thinking.
Paneer (cottage cheese) is a type of cheese that was originally found in the area that today encompasses Iran, India and Pakistan. It is a high protein food it is often substituted for meat in many vegetarian entrees of Indian cuisine. Paneer is a versatile dairy product, it is used in desserts, snacks or for main course cooking. Paneer is good for the skin as it a source of calcium and protein, but it is also high in fat. If you eat paneer daily then you might increase in your. Paneer can be used with many vegetables, like tomato gravy, muttar(peas), spinach. That is you paneer so delicious. It is high in fat and is great to your taste buds. It is almost like chocolate to Americans maybe better. A cousin of mine has a paneer wedding, where everything on the menu was made of paneer.
Most dishes that consist of paneer are main course dishes of the Punjabi food category. Punjabi food wins over most categories of Indian food. It is very fattening, but so delicious.
I am Gujarati another northern city in India. Although I am Gujarati and eat Gujarati food almost every day (while at home) I still love the taste of Punjabi food more. It may be because I don’t get the chance to eat it very often or just because I eat Gujarati food almost every day. Overall Indian food is amazingly flavorful and I can almost guarantee anyone with an open mind would love it.
